The Prompt: "Compose a three-dimensional wooden form that demonstrates the hierarchical arrangement of planar surfaces, combined at right angles, in a visually balanced composition. Consider inherent material qualities while developing a visually interesting object that addresses issues of form, structure, and function."
Only One plank of 1"8"96" Pine, divided into Four sections, and five random books could be used.
Iteration: To begin exploring ideas, I utilized Foamcore board to roughly make 1/4 scale models. AFter this, I narrowed it down to one concept to pursue in wood at full scale. I began to draw from linear, architectural stylings to create a very streamlined structure that would be visually balanced by the perpendicular piercing book elements and cut throughs in the wood that showed the joinery.
Modeling: Once dimensions were roughly established from the foam models, the entire sculpture was modeled in Solidworks and part drawings and perspective views were generated with accurate dimensions of the books used to assist with the building and assembly.
The Final: Five books were given a new life from a local thrift store, and a piece of clear pine was used for the body. no glue or fasteners were allowed, and the entire piece is friction fit and shimmed.
